The legendary….

GOLDIE
(Metalheadz | UK)

It all began in 1991 at a club night called Rage at Heaven. The rave scene had emerged from acid house and was building its own identity, with pioneer Djs such as Fabio and Grooverider mixing cutting edge sounds with vintage funk and reggae and playing tracks like Carl Craig’s seminal ‘Bugs In The Attic’ at 45rpm instead of 33. The vibe was explosive, the adrenalin was pumping. This is where well-travelled Walsall born B boy Goldie (a name he got while customizing gold teeth) ended up when just from a few years in New York and Miami, taken by his new girlfriend Kemistry and her flatmate, known as DJ Storm.

Rage puzzled him the first time, blew his mind the second and there was no turning back: Goldie the UK B Boy who was hanging out with Nellee Hooper and 3 D pre Massive Attack, gold teeth maker, respected breakdancer and renowned Grafitti artist (his first brush with fame was taking part in ‘Bombin’, the definite documentary about the 80s graffiti scene) had found his purpose in life. He was going to make music, and his music was going to be played at clubs like Rage. Soon, Goldie met Mark and Dego AKA 4 Hero – from Reinforced Records, the reference label of the emerging scene. In exchange of artwork and logo design, he got into their legendary Dollis Hill studio. Under their guidance, Goldie did not only capture the vibe of the music he had heard out, but he added his own touch, inspired by his passion for hip hop, an insatiable musical curiosity. getting the ultimate kick of watching and hearing Grooverider play his first ever track, Goldie grew in confidence and made his first official release for Reinforced, ‘Darkrider’ in 1992, under the Rufige Kru moniker. Thanks to the expertise he had picked up and his meeting with like-minded producers such as Doc Scott, Goldie was finding his own sound.

His passion and determination were rewarded the following year, and his third Reinforced release. With its dark atmosphere, steely breakbeats and restless vibe, ‘Terminator’ introduced what was to become a must in jungle production, timestretching. All the DJs followed the path of Grooverider, who instantly played the track when it was given to him. ‘Terminator’ brought a fresh, darker edge to the scene. Jungle had reached another level. Through his own Metalheadz imprint set up shortly after, Goldie showcased early releases by some of the most crucial jungle artists; from Doc Scott, Photek and Peshay to Dillinja, J Majik and Optical. The Metalheadz weekly residency at London’s legendary jazz club The Blue Note captured the essence of the music to a packed and enthusiastic audience and became a must. Goldie landed a contract with PeteTong’s offshoot FFRR, part of London Records, and released the sumptuous Timeless, a twisted hymn to urban Britain. Hailed unanimously, the album sold over 250,000 copies, comforting a charismatic, passionate and inspired Goldie as the spokerperson of the hippest scene of the times.

Fame kept rising beyond music. While turning into a bona fide celebrity with acting in cult and mainstream films, taking part of high profile TV shows, and becoming a fixture in the gossip columns, Goldie never ever lost touch with his jungle roots and was often spotted in the middle of the dancefloor at his own club nights, or paying respects to Grooverider or Randall. Nothing has captured better his attachment to the music than his sporadic return to the ‘Rufige Kru’ moniker for more uncompromising slices of vinyl, such as ‘Beachdrifta’ backed by a ‘Stormtroopaz’ VIP mix for the relaunch of Metalheadz in 2001. for the last few years, Goldie has DJed all over the world, still one of the highest profile ambassador of drum and bass. For Goldie, turning into ‘Rufige Kru’ is capturing the essence of what makes him so passionate about music: a dark, unsettling, gutsy sound going back to the roots of jungle, made even more potent through state of the art studio production. In 2006, Goldie enrolled young and gifted producer Heist (AKA Strider) to help him deliver his ultimate tribute to the scene that captured his heart and soul over fifteen years ago: a Rufige Kru album, ‘Malice In Wonderland’ the first artist album ever for Metalheadz.

ADRED
(Natural Selection)

Born Adam Baker, son of a musically talented father and artist mother he was destined to be a great musician. Growing up listening to David Bowie, Eric Clapton and Thomas Dolby shaped his love for music at a young age. At the age of 16 Adam first heard Drum and Bass at a rave and wanted to replicate the energy and excitement he witnessed first hand. It wasn’t until years later when he had the opportunity to express it first by DJing. At the age of 20, he bought his first set of turntables and a mixer. Quickly learning and understanding the techniques of mixing music, a year later he was given the opportunity to play out. He knew all along that he wanted to create his own music and that being a DJ wouldn’t be enough to set himself apart from rest of the world. Little did he know, that a chance meeting in a neighborhood record store would launch his career as a producer. He didn’t stop at Drum and Bass but ventured into Hip Hop, R&B, Techno, House and everything in between. He doesn’t believe in being pigeonholing himself in one genre and always produces music by feeling and bpm. Currently he is working on multiple releases with Robert Manos in many different genres. Keep an eye out for him and these songs.

NATURAL SELECTION 009

Saturday February 4th, 2012

featuring in their first NYC appearance in 4 years:

THE UPBEATS
(Non Vogue | New Zealand)

Hailing from Wellington, New Zealand, Terror Snake and Downie Wolf are The Upbeats, one of the most legendary production/DJ teams to emerge out the fertile New Zealand drum and bass scene. From playing ironic bootleg mash-ups at a tiny rock bar, to owning and operating their own record label, Non Vogue, this substantially more motivated “Wayne and Garth” of the drum and bass world are genuine innovators; in more ways than one. With a decade of experience in the music game they have released three critically lauded albums (with a fourth in the works) and countless singles on some of the most respected drum and bass record labels in the world. Known for their skills at constructing both digital pub rock anthems for the club and genuinely emotional home listening material – their musicality has seen them collaborate with or remix for the likes of Ed Rush and Optical, Noisia, Bad Company, Hive, Gridlock, Bulletproof, TREi, State of Mind, Shapeshifter and MSTRKRFT. Along the way they’ve performed extensively across New Zealand, Australia, North America, Europe and the UK building a loyal audience worldwide. Favoring an anything goes DJ style, their performances regularly trigger mosh pits, crowdsurfing, topless dancers, on-stage acrobatics and even once, dual zorb surfing at a capacity paint rave. Still as passionate about the creation and performance of music as they were ten years ago, The Upbeats continue to set standards across the board. Creatively speaking, these guys are far from done. Hold tight for the next episode.

DJ DUST
(The Operatives | Australia/NYC)

Humble beginnings over 10 years ago playing hip hop and drum and bass and her flawless and highly technical approach to mixing led to DJ Dust growing in to one of the busiest DJs around Melbourne – supporting some of the biggest names in drum and bass and dubstep to grace the shores including Marky, Storm, Marcus Intalex, Doc Scott, Calibre, Klute, Grooverider, Scuba, Hudson Mohawke, Joker, Skream and Benga and Headhunter. Her consistency was rewarded with worldwide recognition by the organisations Junglist Sistaz and Hardstep Sistaz, inclusion into the mighty Operatives Crew and so many regular bookings that she was titled “Melbourne’s First Lady of Drum and Bass” in a gig write-up. Dust has promoted shows with Joe Seven for Klute, Storm, Calibre & Mark Pritchard, Doc Scott & Marcus Intalex and also promoted local drum and bass night Polaroid with Joe Seven, Consequence and MC Lowqui. Dust also ran a radio show on Kiss FM with DJ Fiend, with whom she also writes the music blog weareallsorts.com In April this year DJ Dust decided she needed a change of scenery and moved to NYC, where she has been playing regular hip hop sets alongside the likes of J Period, Boogie Blind and Suga Ray and secured a set at the celebrated Sun and Bass Festival in Sardinia.

MOUSKY
(Red Light Music | NYC)

+Birthday Set!+
Born and raised in NYC, Mousky, ex-vocalist in a rock band, began DJing while living in Washington D.C. After years of playing countless house parties, hosting a college radio show, and a holding a year-long residency at Cafe Japone, Mousky moved back home. He has since rocked dozens of New York clubs including Shelter, Sullivan Room, Public Assembly, Love, Piano’s, The Cove, Bar 13, Europa and Southpaw. Mousky’s fun-loving, international sound has also rattled packed dancefloors in South America, headlining wild parties in Buenos Aires, Argentina, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at major venues such as Bahrein and D-Edge. His music is also all over the map, often seamlessly mixing multiple styles into the same set. Mousky’s sets are bass-heavy, rowdy, uplifting and risqué. Heavily influenced by middle eastern, Brazilian and reggae music, his crowd-pleasing, energetic performances are always full of surprises. No matter what style, venue, crowd or city, Mousky always keeps the dancefloor shakin’ with A1 selection and airtight mixing.

With Natural Selection residents:

DJ STRIFE
(Driven AM | 16 Chapel | Sister NYC)

Music is her life. Drum and Bass is her passion. Erica Munday, A.K.A. DJ Strife, has had a love for music for as long as she can remember. It’s that feeling that when you close your eyes and simply listen…the whole world disappears. Strife’s involvement in the U.S. underground music scene started back in 1994 when she was only 14 and attended her first rave. After this one night she knew right then that this music was something that truly touched her soul and would be a part of her life forever. She soon thereafter was going to every event on the east coast that she could, which eventually lead her to her next natural step…promoting. She started promoting for one of the largest event companies on the east coast, Park Rave Maddness. And by the time she was 16 she had made enough contacts in
the scene and wanted to continue going forward by learning how to DJ – to be that person that controlled the crowd’s inner feelings by taking you on a journey with the music they wove together. At first by playing fast-paced Hard Trance and Hard Acid music that got the crowd going, but eventually at 19 while in college in New York for Audio Recording, switched to her growing love for Drum and Bass.

2003 brought the way of House DJ, Fame and his Simply Bangin’ Productions which merged Strife and Fame together for combined efforts in weekly events in NYC. By joining a night of House and Drum and Bass music this allowed them to bring both styles of music together in one place. Also in 2003 Strife got linked up with all female crew Sister NYC (the NYC chapter of successful San Francisco group). Right away this combination of all genre woman DJ’s and MC’s connected with her, and knew together they could really make a dent in furthering woman and their place in Electronic music. Being interviewed for Los Angeles collective Technotreff’s nationally distributed “Girls of Techno” DVD also gave her a chance to speak her mind on the empowerment on being a female DJ. Hosting and playing at events all the way from New York to Miami to Brazil to Germany to London and back again, Strife continues to push the Drum and Bass sound that she strives for everyone to hear and feel.

Strife’s flow of Liquid Drum and Bass sounds infused with Brazillian flavor and vocal tunes make her track selection stream together with each blended mix. As well as being endorsed by keyboard company Korg, Strife has performed all over nationally and internationally at such events as the DEMF, Detroit Electronic Music Festival, at renowned UK monthlies “Therapy Sessions” & “Metric”, and touring in Brazil and Germany alongside heavyweights such as High Contrast, Bad Company, Dylan, Loxy, & B Key, Patife, Andy, Drumagick, and Mickey Finn. In addition, she has taken part at conventions in Nashville, TN for the NAMM show, at Madison Square Garden in her residence of NY for product demos, and in Miami for the WMC, Winter Music Conference, with Sister USA.

NYC’s premier Drum and Bass party ‘Natural Selection’ is back at The National Underground with our first residents night!

with Dj’s…

RAW Q
(Driven AM | Direct Drive | Natural Selection | NYC)

Raw Q (aka: Dj Beau) is one of NYC’s original pioneers of drum n’ bass and electronic music. As a born and raised native of NYC’s East Village, Beau has been dj’ing underground clubs and raves in NYC, and the USA, as well as Puerto Rico for over 16 years and counting. His resume as a dj/producer is a veritable timeline of many of the most significant parties and events of the NYC/US electronic music culture. Whether it’s from his beginnings as an original Liquid Sky and Satellite Records dj (circa ’95) to his current status as one of Dj Zinc’s Bingo Allstars and a selected tag-team partner of DJ DB at the highly acclaimed and now defunct Secret Night of Science monthly parties at LOVE, Beau has been a truely devoted contributor to underground electronic music and rave culture since the early days.

Throughout his years as a performer and respected dj, Beau has been selected as the opener for such high profile artists as: Fabio and Grooverider, Planet of the Drums, Marcus Intalex, Calibre, Klute and has shared the bill with the likes of LTJ Bukem, Shy-Fx, Bad Company, Dj Craze and many more. He is currently a resident of Direct Drive, and performed regularly as a special guest at Secret Night of Science, Let It Roll, and Dream. He still continues to perform at NYC’s longest running 21+ weekly dnb night, Camouflage.

Beau is also well known for his original music production. In 95′ he teamed up with Dj Ani (NASA, Deee-Lite) and created a series of tunes which appeared on Dj Soulslinger’s Jungle Sky imprint (the first US Drum n Bass Label). In 2003 Beau transformed into Raw Q. As Raw Q, his music has had a major impact in the world of electronic music with tunes such as ‘Vital Soul’ which appeared on Dj Zinc’s reputable Bingo imprint and was ranked 11th in the BBC’s Global Dance Music charts (jul.13.04), which encompasses all forms of dance music. With tunes such as Vital Soul, Caspian Moon, Summer Rain and Jagged Edge, Raw Q’s music has been embraced by such legendary artists as LTJ Bukem, Fabio, Roni Size, DB, Marcus Intalex, Marky, Zinc, Bryan Gee, Bailey, Dj Flight and countless others. Beau’s goal as an artist and musician is to provide inspiring, forward thinking, positive music for as many open minded people as possible. Beau is aware that music is a powerful tool for unity and positive change, and an vitally essential form of communication.

NATURAL SELECTION 005

LYNX
(Detail Recordings | Soul:R | UK)

Having already released across a host of leading labels, including Soul:r, Digital Soundboy, Creative Source, Bingo and 31 Records, and now his own Detail Recordings. Lynx has established himself firmly at the forefront of a fresh new sound within drum & bass. A producer par-excellence, his tracks range in style from straight-up dancefloor funk to deep and boundary-pushing beats but always maintain the attention to detail that has come to be Lynx’s trademark. “Electronic Genius” – DJ Fabio (BBC RADIO 1)… “Brilliant” – Laurent Garnier… “A landmark in D&B history” – DJ Teebee… “The most conceptually brilliant D&B record of the modern era… simply irresistible” – Knowledge Mag… “This is a creative tour de force of genuine songs, that puts its home genre to shame, sheer genius: 9/10″ – IDJ Mag… “gives hope to all those becoming disillusioned with the current state of musical affairs in D&B” – ATM Mag… Lynx is currently working on his 2nd album to be released on Detail Recordings in September 2011.

KEMO

KEMO joined forces with LYNX in 2009 to create and release the critically acclaimed “The Raw Truth” album. The intricate production and mesmerizing vocals of the uniquely innovative “The Raw Truth” LP led to it being nominated as Best Album at the official DNBA Awards 2009.

SINISTARR
(Metalheadz | Hospital | Creative Source | Peer Pressure | Driven AM / Detroit)

Causing much commotion and change over the last few years has been Detroit, Michigan’s own Sinistarr. Combining the native sounds of Detroit techno, electro and house into his own stew, Sinistarr gained the attention from tastemakers like Fabio early on, who had Sinistarr’s “Leeroy Jenkins” pegged early for the mighty Creative Source. While that didn’t pan out (“Leeroy Jenkins” later ended up on Influence), this did not slow his roll down one bit. Aside from the “Leeroy Jenkins” 12”, he also signed a 12” to Nu Directions (“Anorak” / “Nubienne”), released an EP (“Something’s Working” on Blu Saphir Digital) and dropped a tune called “Recovery” on Deep Soul Music’s Future Without A Past CD compilation. Horizons Music has picked up on his “Lynx Is Playing At My House” lick (with whom he’s recently inked a nice deal with), not to mention a 12” for Creative Source in the future. Aside from the production side of things, he’s also a solid DJ, spinning mixes for a number of podcasts (BBS Bookings, Sonorous Music, etc.) and club dates, and spend time as an A&R for San Diego’s Peer Pressure Recordings, helping get quality producers the world over some much-needed shine. Towards the end of 2009, Sinistarr signed to Hospital Records, and in 2010 Sinistarr signed to the legendary Metalheadz!

DJ SEEN
(Driven AM | Direct Drive | Burner Brothers | Subsonik Sound)

For the last 15 years, real heads can’t think about Drum & Bass in New York City without mentioning DJ Seen’s name. He’s championed the scene since 1994, back when the Ragga vibes were running rampant, and is still promoting Drum & Bass’s evolution to this day. He is a man who is well-respected for his no-nonsense approach to quality sets and is also seen as an acclaimed producer with his work alongside DJ Wally/Pish Posh. He is also most notably known for his work as 1/3 of The Burner Brothers, a crew whose productions have graced numerous labels including Jungle Sky, Magic Vinyl, Steppasoundz and Rawkuts. Let’s take a step back, though… Back in early 1996, DJ Seen helped form the Audio Arcade with MC Panik, of Konkrete Jungle fame, whose mission was to be a passageway, or arcade, for which to represent Drum & Bass to the fullest. It was nearly three years later when Seen started producing alongside DJ Wally/Pish Posh, most notably with “The Monsta” from Pish Posh’s Up Jumps the Boogie CD. This was the perfect union: Seen already had the pulse of the dance-floor tapped and DJ Wally/Pish Posh’s established reputation, they created some truly unique American Drum & Bass. This, of course, caused quite a commotion. To this day, many East Coast American Drum & Bass fans first related to DJ Wally & Seen when they thought of homegrown Drum & Bass artists. This union helped lead to numerous releases on Rawkus’ Rawkuts imprint, a label which would soon give DJ Seen the title of label manager. Although the label folded along with Rawkus, Seen’s work as manager helped further establish the brand on a more international level, scoring unforgettable releases like the “Oh No” remixes by John B, as well as tracks from producers like Gridlok, Jo-S, JuJu and KC. In this time period, Drum & Bass’s own treacherous 3, The Burner Brothers (DJ Seen, Pish Posh & Chris Thomas), were born. Their productions gained much praise and rewinds, both stateside and within the hands of top UK selectors. For a time, DJ Seen fell silent from the more mainstream-side of Drum & Bass, even though he still held it down as resident DJ at NYC’s Direct Drive (www.directdrive.net). In 2006, he stopped his work with various labels to better concentrate on his own productions and DJing. As a result, DJ Seen is known to be one of the most hard-working DJs in the New York area; packing the Drum & Bass rooms at weeklies and parties in Atlanta, South Beach, San Francisco, Los Angeles and other US cities. He is still holding it down at Direct Drive and in 2008 has not only mentioned that he has a serious batch of solo tunes, but he is also working on new material for a full length album with The Burner Brothers! One can only hope that 2009 and beyond sees DJ Seen and the Burner Brothers take back the crown and chart a new path to that next level…

NATURAL SELECTION 004

S.P.Y
(Soul:r | Metalheadz | Innerground) +NYC Debut+

S.P.Y has firmly established himself as one of the most exciting producers and DJs in drum & bass, earning support across the scene with consistent releases on top labels such as RAM, Innerground, Soul:r, Metalheadz, Shogun. In demand as a DJ, producer, collaborator (with the likes of Marcus Intalex, Marky and Total Science) and remixer (Goldie, Deadmau5, Claude van Stroke and Zinc feat Miss Dynamite) he’s keeping up the pace in 2011 with further releases set for Soul:r, Subtitles, Razors Edge and Reinforced early in the year plus bigger projects in the pipeline.

Since moving to London from Sao Paolo 7 years ago, Carlos Lima aka S.P.Y hasn’t looked back. Initially drawn to the city for it’s music and culture, S.P.Y soon settled in amongst the vibrant drum & bass scene. With a background in DJing stretching back to the age of 12, his skills behind the turntables were already in place and he set out to make his mark as a producer. A natural talent for music production certainly helped and, after just six months of learning on basic equipment, he signed his first ever release to Metalheadz in 2005. His impressive
debut ‘Til Dawn’ was included on the Winter of Content compilation album and a sure sign that S.P.Y would be one to watch.

In 2006, he quickly followed up with ‘Black Flag b/w Double Dragon’ for new label Med School and helped set the standard for Hospital’s alternative, more experimental imprint. Developing his own brand of original yet dancefloorfriendly beats, S.P.Y stepped up his game with a further single (‘Ghost Ship b/w Silent Sleeper’) before moving on to release on diverse labels including Critical and Samurai.

A series of collaborations followed with the likes of Mosus, Physics, BCee and Kiat: no surprise, given S.P.Ys reputation in the studio and professional yet easy-going outlook. Together with fellow Brazilian C.A.B.L.E., he forms Damage Inc and the duo have released on Total Science’s Advanced imprint. In 2008, two of his joint productions (‘Close Encounters’ with Kiat and ‘Cold 909s’ with Mosus) were among the standout tracks in the excellent DAT Music 2 compilation and marked his debut for Soul:r.

2009 brought his first solo EP for Soul:r, demonstrating his diversity drawing together deeper vibes and dancefloor sensibilities. He also established lasting production partnerships with Total Science and DJ Marky and dropped further releases on Digital Soundboy, Innerground and Metalheadz.

In 2010 S.P.Y stepped it again and proved to be capable of both quality and consistency, delivering standout releases for Ram, Metalheadz, Shogun and Spearhead. His tracks won DJ support across the scene, with Friction featuring 5 S.P.Y productions on his Ministry of Sound mix CD and Andy C selecting 4 for his Nightlife CD. Marky & S.P.Y also took on highprofile remixes for the likes of Deadmau5, Claude von Stroke and Zinc Ft. Miss Dynamite, with S.P.Y’s own personal unofficial relicks of Zero 7 and LTJ Bukem becoming a signature in his live sets.

He’s keeping up the pace in 2011, with further releases set for Soul:r, Subtitles, Razors Edge and Reinforced early in the year before turning his attentions to album projects later in the year. Look out for collaborative appearances on Marcus Intalex’s album and more alongside Total Science and Marky as well as solo material forthcoming from this dynamic and hard-working DJ/producer.

D-BRIDGE
(Exit Records | Metalheadz)

D-Bridge is a legendary figure in drum & bass. Though his career stretches back to the early 90s, it was in his role as one quarter of the irrepressible drum & bass super-group Bad Company in the late 90s and early 00s that he really stamped his mark on the scene, dominating the sound of drum & bass during that period. Tunes like ‘The Nine’, ‘Planet Dust’ and ‘Nitrous’ are unforgettable classics and are the tip of the iceberg of an incredible back catalog of work from the foursome.

Since they disbanded, D-Bridge has carved a superb reputation as a solo artist, with a more refined sound that is no less effective in the clubs, with tunes like ‘True Romance’, ‘Odessa’ and ‘Twilight’ leaving a lasting impression on the scene. His label Exit Records is renowned for quality over quantity, with all releases carrying a touch of class.

He’s a highly sought after DJ, and his widespread appeal is best demonstrated by the fact that he regularly appears at nearly every one of our wide range of drum & bass nights, from the tough beats of Renegade Hardware to the soulful vibes of Swerve, via Ram Records rave-up and Shogun Audio’s slightly more left of center throw-down.

NATURAL SELECTION 003

with Dj’s…

A-SIDES
(Eastside | Bassdrive | Metalheadz | Serato)

true veteran DJ, producer and engineer, A Sides has over 500 released tracks to his name making him one of the most prolific and versatile artists in drum & bass. Over the course of his extensive career, A Sides has never limited himself to a single style and has proved to be a highly capable selector whether drawing for dubstep, hip hop or old school drum & bass. A Serato ambassador and truly global citizen, he’s often found in-between bases in the UK, USA and NZ yet still finds time to run his labels Eastside and BassHead Music. In 2010, he followed up his second LP “Worldwide” with the massive bassline roller ‘One DJ’ for Clear Skyz, proving once again he can smash dancefloors at will with his productions as well as DJ skills.

Jason Cambridge (aka A Sides) has been producing music since 1990 and has released well over 500 tracks to date across many of the scene’s biggest labels. He established his own label Eastside Records in 1996 and has since put out over 75 releases, including two compilation albums (Eastside Jamz Volumes 1 & 2) as well as the A Sides solo album “Follow The Groove.” A highly accomplished engineer as well as an artist in his own right, A Sides has collaborated with the likes of Calibre, jazz musician Nathan Haines (under the guise of Sci-Clone) and most recently Makoto and DJ Marky. His long-standing partnership with MC Fats has borne some of his biggest tracks to date, including the massive hit “What U Don’t Know” which featured on A Sides’ debut long-player in 2003. To catch the pair performing live is to hear drum & bass at it’s finest, with the deep soul sound of MC Fats bringing the perfect complement to A Sides razor sharp beats.

With tracks released on many other labels such as Metalheadz, Valve, True Playaz, Bingo, Innerground, Reinforced, Advanced, Liq-weed Ganja and Hospital to name but a few, A Sides has a discography of truly epic proportions. A veteran of the scene from the early days, through hardcore to jungle to drum & bass, his influence has been immense. Over the years he’s taken on the role A&R for many labels, including of course his own imprints Fuze and Eastside, and was among the first to recognize and nurture the talent of producers such as Break.

Always moving forward and shaping new styles, in 2008 he established BassHead Music together with Juan BassHead aka DJ Burn to showcase the finest in dubstep and bass heavy beats. After a successful debut (feat. 12th Planet and Skream) there are releases lined up from Otto Von Schirach, Noah D feat. Einstein, Total Science and Datsik plus remixes being supplied by high profile artists such as Jakes, Break, DJ Sneak and Bassnectar. With a diverse music policy, encompassing not just dubstep but other bass-heavy beats, BassHead has some exciting projects in the making over the next 12 months.

A Sides has also recently added a digital arm to Eastside Records and made the entire back-catalogue available for mp3 download from digital store Beatport. He’s also produced a mix CD for Twisted Individual’s Liquid Allsorts label, featuring vocals from Deeizm as well as the track “Just Be” from the duo.

With a reputation for sets that are tight and technical sets as well diverse, A Sides is a natural ambassador for Rane Serato Scratch Live. From road-testing new equipment on performances across the globe to conducting workshops, such as those at Sun & Bass Festival in 2008 and Miami Winter Music Conference 2009, A Sides has strong links with the company and shares a forward-thinking outlook.

A Sides’ career as a DJ continues to take him around the globe, clocking up airmiles with regular annual tours of Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Europe. A regular at high-profile events like Miami WMC and Sun & Bass festival in Sardinia, his passion for drum & bass is as strong as it ever as he represents the music he loves worldwide.

DJ DARA
(Breakbeat Science | Planet of The Drums | NYC)

A member of the infamous Planet of the Drums crew alongside fellow drum n bass pioneers AK1200, Dieselboy, & J Messinian, this Irish transplant has been a dominant figure in the U.S. drum n bass scene since his arrival here in 1994. His discography includes 2 critically acclaimed full length artist albums, 8 DJ mix CDs, as well as numerous singles and remixes for artists such as Freq Nasty, Afrika Bambaata and Keoki. Dara co-founded the nation’s first & largest drum n bass record store, Breakbeat Science, in NYC which doubles as his own imprint, Breakbeat Science Recordings. He has been featured in countless magazine articles and interviews both in the US and worldwide. He previously hosted one of the internet’s most popular drum n bass broadcasts, Velocity, where he regularly interviewed leading drum n bass artists such as Jonny L, Kemistry & Storm, Trace, Ed Rush, Optical, Hype, Andy C, Zinc, and many others. Dara’s long-standing relationships with the world’s drum n bass elite gives him access to an astounding amount of new and unreleased material. His brilliant recording endeavors along with his incessant touring marked by consistently awe-inspiring DJ sets have made him one of the most recognized and well respected DJs in the country.
