Artists
(Driven AM | Breakbeat Science | NYC)

Arriving in New York from London in ’89, it could be argued that no one has done more for Drum & Bass in America than DB. First with his hardcore Breakbeat club NASA, (featured in the Larry Clark film Kids) then by launching Sm:)e Communications and releasing the first Jungle singles & compilations in the U.S, as well as signing dj Dara, thus kick starting his artist career. He & Dara then opened Breakbeat Science, dedicated to Drum & Bass, It quickly become not only the most respected record store & label, but also the very epicenter of the jungle community in the U.S. He recently released an artist project with partner Stakka under the name Ror-Shak, focusing & pushing the limits on the more musical side of the genre, which as a dj, is what DB has become best loved for. He has also recently released the “Secret Art Of Science 2″. DB’s 13th mix cd in as many years. DB is a partner in both the cutting edge men’s lifestyle shop BBlessing, & the multi media & record label Deaf Dumb & Blind Recordings. When he has a second to spare he spends it with his wife & two small children, or tries to sleep.

Random Movement
(Driven AM | Bassbin | Innerground | Bingo | Creative Source | Liquid V)
Random Movement began as two people, Jack Sheets (DJ Shapeshifter), and Mike Richards (Insert, later known as mjr). Mikes exposure to the drum & bass genre was solidified by Jack’s wide variety of music, and Mikes ongoing study as a musician was pushed even further into the world of electronic music. Jack had been DJ’ing steadily for 7 years, becoming well-established in the mid-west United States. His skill, combined with Mikes musical as well as technical expertise in the IDM/Industrial/Jazz/Soul & Funk music genres seemed to form a perfect blend of production capabilities, as well as a deeply bonded friendship.
After a few months of tweaking, the sound they were going for was beginning to gel, and their first demo cd eventually ended up in Dara’s hands. Not even a week had passed before Breakbeat Science came knocking on their door, and the boys realized that they really had something going for them. Half a year later, after much turmoil in both their personal lives, “Stars in the Dark” was made, and quickly picked up by Rohan of Bassbin, along with several other tracks, and the ball really began rolling for the two of them.
Shortly after the songs had been picked up by Rohan, the relationship between Mike and Jack had begun to strain their friendship, and it was agreed that it would be best if Jack opted to leave the project. Mike was then left to take up the reigns of the project, which, on the creative/musical side, he had held the captains seat from the beginning. The music of Random Movement had become even more finely tuned, and singles were being picked up by labels such as Innerground, Creative Source, Liquid V, Bingo, Progress, Timeless, Zeropoint, and most recently Nu Directions. Collaborations between Mike and Focus (formerly of Basic Operations) have landed record deals with Bingo and Innerground as well.
Mikes natural tendency has been to play out doing a live set, incorporating his near-25 years of musical experience into both a technical and uplifting soulful performance, jamming riffs ..s as well as sequencing his own material live. He has also managed to slide comfortably into the role as DJ, playing in various places across the states. His loose-swinging, deep and soulful vibes take most club goers onto his own personal journey of introspection and enlightenment, commanding music appreciators both new and old to turn their heads. Playing everything from classics to brand new gems, the Random Movement DJ set seems to touch all in the crowd thru out the night.
Mike is currently working on a number of releases with Innerground among many others being kept under raps for now. Random Movement Radio will be launching on Bassdrive.com at the end of August/early September 2007 every Wednesday from 5-8 CMT, and will offer a wide range of music mostly related to the Drum n’ Bass genre, but don’t be surprised if the program ventures out into other realms. Expect to hear new guest artists weekly as well as gear reviews, contests, recording tips, and other dialog that would interest a wider range of listeners. Random Movement collaborations will continue to hit a broader spectrum of artists such as Alix Perez, Redeyes, Atlantic Connection, Chino, and more musicians on the soulful tip. He is still sampling away from his vinyl collection, as well as writing new music daily, and hopes to have a whole host of new singles on various labels around the globe.

Jo-S
(Driven AM |Westbay Intl | Shogun Ltd | 31 Records | Sonorous | Peer Pressure | Taciturn Records | LA)

After bursting on to the New York electronic music scene in the late 90s as a DJ and Producer, JO-S has revitalized his sound by adding vocals to both his DJ sets and original songs. Several #1 singles have resulted from this new endeavor.
Los Angeles, CA. April 20, 2009 – After 14 years as a drum and bass DJ and producer, JO-S is now developing his skills as a lyricist and vocalist. His congenital talents have allowed JO-S to find new inspiration as he continues to explore his potential as a singer and MC. “I’m always looking for new ways to expand the live performance aspect of my craft. Singing was the natural progression. It has expanded my skill set as an artist thus allowing me to add more production value to my live DJ sets. I’ve always felt it was important to be a positive spokesperson for the scene as well. My lyrics typify this sentiment. I choose to write about topics that step outside of the club scene.”
This positive energy and motivation to explore his potential as a vocalist earned him a 12” release on Westbay International Recordings. “Define” (co-produced by Kubatko) features the vocal work of JO-S for the first time on vinyl. The lyrics of “Define” reveal that within drum and bass music, there are no boundaries. “When I wrote the lyrics I was thinking about the genre splitting that was going on within the scene. I felt this was segregating the fans, producers and DJs. Throughout my tenure as a DJ and producer, I’ve explored all styles and I’m known for running the gamut of sounds almost every time I play. I represent progressive drum and bass music that moves the dance floor… that’s my job as a performer.”
Since JO-S signed to Westbay Recordings (one of the top-ten selling drum and bass labels distributed through Nu-Urban Distribution), he has now garnered enough attention overseas to perform in the UK. In
celebration of his forthcoming release, JO-S played alongside such notable artists as Killa Kella, Dbridge and Lynx at a party called Diverse in Swindon, UK. He was also given a slot to showcase his vocal
talents along with his DJ skills at Subfactory in Reading, UK. As JO-S continued to move forward with this newfound vision, he started receiving attention from various producers from around the globe. One
artist who beckoned was Sinistarr hailing from Detroit. He flaunts an innovative, yet minimal soulful sound. “Vines” was the result of the collaboration. Sinistarr helped JO-S reach artists like LTJ Bukem, Fabio, Spectrasoul, Random Movement and Stunna who are all representing his music.
In addition to working with Sinistarr, JO-S was contacted by a prolific artist named Lenzman from the Netherlands. He is noted for releases on Spearhead, Phunkfiction and C.I.A. The two began collaborating on a tune called “Emeralds”. DJ Friction signed it for release on his top ten label, Shogun Ltd. When Friction came to Los Angeles to perform at Bassrush in January of 09’, JO-S was invited on stage for an impromptu live vocal performance of “Emeralds”. Now a smash hit, “Emeralds” sold out within a day when first released on promo. “Emeralds” also reached 1 on the Beatport and Juno download charts. The success JO-S has enjoyed by pairing up with Lenzman has lead to other signings on such labels as 31 Records and Goldie’s highly respected imprint Metalheadz.

Mixmaster Doc
(Driven AM | 31 Records | Horizons Music | South Carolina)
With his first signing to Doc Scott’s legendary 31 Records, Dan Brady AKA Mixmaster Doc, burst onto the drum & bass scene seemingly overnight. Humbled by the support of a whos who list of A-list DJ’s such as Fabio, Marky, NuTone, Lynx, Commix, LTJ Bukem, Asides & Goldie to name but a few, he became focused on producing the old school sound that originally drew him in at age 13. Born and raised in NJ, Doc spent most of his youth a slave to DJ culture, buying tapepacks, digging in the crates, and of course spending hours a day behind the decks. Even before he was able to drive, his grandmother made sure he never missed a beat, taking him to all the area records stores and at times even driving him to raves so he could play his first gigs.
Though Dan’s original career was to be in medicine, hence the name “Doc”, he couldn’t shake his overwhelming passion for drum & bass. His move to Myrtle Beach, SC, where he currently resides, marks the pivital moment where he gave up medicine and instead began to devolop his trademark sound. Known for his cinematatic atmoshpheres, use of classic drum and bass breaks, and of course his earth shattering bass, Doc’s music quickly became popular with both djs and ravers a like. One cant help but hear Doc’s influences in music. Whether its the sub pounding bristol basslines or the eerie scifi vibe that was such a part of the legendary blue note sound, Doc’s music takes us back to a time when the music was alive and fresh. When the music was more then just music, when it was a way of life.

Dave Owen

With more support and upcoming co-laborations than can be mentioned, Dave Owen is quickly becoming one of the brightest stars in drum-n-bass; just go ask LTJ Bukem, Grooverider, Fabio or Bailey, whom all drop Dave’s tunes on the regular. The young producer’s style blends hip-hop and old soul samples w/ crisp drums to create a sound that is truly unique. Between a number of smaller releases, his 12″ on Influence and massive ‘Yo Girl’ forthcoming on Creative Source Dave has had a great response in the DnB charts and top 10s for the past few months. Watch for much more to come from this musical savant.

Nookie
(Driven AM | Stricktly Digital | Phuzion Records)
Undoubtedly one of the leading lights in the Drum & Bass scene, Nookie, aka Cloud Nine/Second Vision/New Balance (along with Blame), is London/Herts DJ/producer/artist/remixer Gavin Cheung. To his credit is “Give a little love”, one of the first underground rave anthems, which came out on absolute 2 records then re-released on Reinforced Records in 1993. “The sound of music”, another early rave anthem from “The return of Nookie EP”, also issued by Reinforced records was to catapult him into the limelight, “Snow”/”Jazzmin” on Moving Shadow, one of the first tunes to use a real jazz double bass. He was also running his own label in the early nineties (Daddy Armshouse Records) with his long-time friend Pedro, and had a number of releases to his credit.
In 1995 Nookie released his debut LP on Reinforced Records entitled ‘The Sound of Music’. This proved to be a huge success and gave Nookie a more worldwide status. He has been lucky enough through his work to travel all around the world experiencing different cultures and seeing how others perceive the sound of his music. Countries that he has visited include Germany, Italy, Japan, America, Poland, Yugoslavia, Estonia, and Spain amongst others. He has worked with many great artists and in 1998 he got to work on his second album with one of his all time heroes Larry Heard aka Mr Fingers. This was released through Sony Records in Japan and helped him reach a wider audience within the dance music scene. Included on this album is the Ibiza/Café Del Mar classic “Paradise”.
A year on and he released his third album also through Sony Records (Japan) under his other artist name ‘Cloud Nine’. During this time he got to tour Japan to promote this album alongside MC Five Alive, Ray Keith and singer Beverley who featured on this album project with the two main tracks “Distant Affair” and “Living in a Ghetto” which was later remixed by Peshay. His status as a remixer continues to rise, not least due to his interpretation of Goldie’s instant classic “Inner city life”. Other artists to have received the Nookie remix treatment include Cutty Ranks, Flourgon & Ninjaman, Doc Scott, Omni Trio, Adam F, Ganja Crew and more recently his remix of MC Conrad’s “Energetic Poetry” and The Pedge’s “What’s Up Partner?” released on Dread Recordings. DJ’s who have helped promote his work over the years include Fabio, Grooverider, LTJ Bukem and Ray Keith.
In terms of Good Looking, Nookie had already had various releases under his other aliases including New Balance “Reflections” and Second Vision “The Italian job”. Recently he has added multiple 12″ releases, the First Light, Oceanic and Free The Funk EPs and “In@thedeepend”, his massive debut album on Good Looking Records and his forth album in total. Featured on his E.P’s was the massive “Continental Drift” which was a personal favourite of LTJ Bukem. Tracks included on “In@thedeepend” are “Innerspace”, “Dimensions of Sound” and the piano driven anthem “Natural Experience” which Good Looking records recruit Makoto has remixed. Despite these quality releases, Nookie is not resting on his laurels. He’s always looking at new ways to stretch his musical and DJ’ing talents and has already produced some House tunes for his “In@thedeepend” album.
His current projects include Strictly Digital, which is an mp3 download website featuring exclusive artist’s tunes from established and up-and-coming producers. ‘The current music market clearly shows that people are veering more to the digital form of music for their listening pleasure, it’s also very hard for new, up & coming producers to get their work heard as many labels aren’t in the position to invest money in to new artists’. In 2006 Nookie started his Phuzion Records vinyl label and this will be the main outlet for Nookie’s Drum & Bass productions. The fifth Nookie artist album is entitled ‘Beyond Blue’ and has been eagerly anticipated over the past 2 years. Nookie also hosts his extremely successful monthly Drum & Bass events called ‘Atmosphere’

Sinistarr
(Driven AM | Hospital | Creative Source | Horizons | Peer Pressure)
Causing much commotion and change over the last year has been Detroit, Michigan’s own Sinistarr. Combining the native sounds of Detroit techno, electro and house into his own stew, Sinistarr gained the attention from tastemakers like Fabio early on, who had Sinistarr’s “Leeroy Jenkins” pegged early for the mighty Creative Source. While that didn’t pan out (“Leeroy Jenkins” later ended up on Influence), this did not slow his roll down one bit. Aside from the “Leeroy Jenkins” 12”, he also signed a 12” to Nu Directions (“Anorak” / “Nubienne”), released an EP (“Something’s Working” on Blu Saphir Digital) and dropped a tune called “Recovery” on Deep Soul Music’s Future Without A Past CD compilation. Horizons Music has picked up on his “Lynx Is Playing At My House” lick (with whom he’s recently inked a nice deal with), not to mention a 12” for Creative Source in the future.
Aside from the production side of things, he’s also a solid DJ, spinning mixes for a number of podcasts (BBS Bookings, Sonorous Music, etc.) and club dates, and spend time as an A&R for San Diego’s Peer Pressure Recordings, helping get quality producers the world over some much-needed shine. Label heads, promoters and DJs alike should keep an ear to the ground, as this young talent is surely set to turn heads in 2009, and beyond.

DJ Seen
(Driven AM | Direct Drive | Burner Brothers)
Playing in a tearing, Hi-energy style of drum and bass, DJ Seen has proven, hands-down, that he can move any crowd. Whether it be his airtight mixing, his wicked throw-ins, or the pure quality of his selection, Seen is all about business. Due to his frequent appearances and dramatic response at top parties, the name DJ Seen has become synonymous with NYC drum and bass. DJ Seen began spinning drum and bass back in 1994, when ragga jungle was significant in the scene; he has tirelessly promoted drum and bass and its evolution ever since. Early in 1996, DJ Seen and Konkrete Jungle’s MC Panik formed the Audio Arcade, a crew whose mission was to create a passageway, or arcade, through which to present this music. Seen began co-producing with Pish Posh in 1999, bringing his dance floor expertise and fresh ideas to the studio of the American pioneer. Making a rumble from the get go with tunes released on Rawkuts/Rawkus, set the stage for DJ Seen to team with Pish Posh and Chris Thomas as The Burner Brothers.
The Burner Brothers have set the pace for Stateside drum and bass, with a stream of floor stormers getting instant approval in their own DJ sets, and play from top UK and US selectors. In the year 2000 DJ Seen added the title of Label Manager of Rawkuts to his credentials, as he attended to the speedy revival of the imprint as an international force until its demise due to corporate take over of the mother label Rawkus. DJ Seen has new plans for the year 2006 as he has stoped working on labels to work more on his production and concentrate on dj’ing again. In a city so full of talented DJs, Seen stands out with his hard work, skill, and his infectious festive spirit. Filling rooms at countless drum and bass weeklies and raves in New York City, Atlanta, South Beach, San Francisco, LA and around America, DJ Seen can currently be found in rotation as an esteemed resident at NYC’s Direct Drive.

DJ Strife
(Dj-Strife.com | Sister NYC)
Music is her life. Drum and Bass is her passion. Erica Munday, A.K.A. DJ Strife, has had a love for music for as long as she can remember. It’s that feeling that when you close your eyes and simply listen…the whole world disappears. Strife’s involvement in the U.S. underground music scene started back in 1994 when she was only 14 and attended her first rave. After this one night she knew right then that this music was something that truly touched her soul and would be a part of her life forever. She soon thereafter was going to every event on the east coast that she could, which eventually lead her to her next natural step…promoting. She started promoting for one of the largest event companies on the east coast, Park Rave Maddness. And by the time she was 16 she had made enough contacts in
the scene and wanted to continue going forward by learning how to DJ – to be that person that controlled the crowd’s inner feelings by taking you on a journey with the music they wove together. At first by playing fast-paced Hard Trance and Hard Acid music that got the crowd going, but eventually at 19 while in college in New York for Audio Recording, switched to her growing love for Drum and Bass.
2003 brought the way of House DJ, Fame and his Simply Bangin’ Productions which merged Strife and Fame together for combined efforts in weekly events in NYC. By joining a night of House and Drum and Bass music this allowed them to bring both styles of music together in one place. Also in 2003 Strife got linked up with all female crew Sister NYC (the NYC chapter of successful San Francisco group). Right away this combination of all genre woman DJ’s and MC’s connected with her, and knew together they could really make a dent in furthering woman and their place in Electronic music. Being interviewed for Los Angeles collective Technotreff’s nationally distributed “Girls of Techno” DVD also gave her a chance to speak her mind on the empowerment on being a female DJ. Hosting and playing at events all the way from New York to Miami to Brazil to Germany to London and back again, Strife continues to push the Drum and Bass sound that she strives for everyone to hear and feel.
Strife’s flow of Liquid Drum and Bass sounds infused with Brazillian flavor and vocal tunes make her track selection stream together with each blended mix. As well as being endorsed by keyboard company Korg, Strife has performed all over nationally and internationally at such events as the DEMF, Detroit Electronic Music Festival, at renowned UK monthlies “Therapy Sessions” & “Metric”, and touring in Brazil and Germany alongside heavyweights such as High Contrast, Bad Company, Dylan, Loxy, & B Key, Patife, Andy, Drumagick, and Mickey Finn. In addition, she has taken part at conventions in Nashville, TN for the NAMM show, at Madison Square Garden in her residence of NY for product demos, and in Miami for the WMC, Winter Music Conference, with Sister USA.

Direct Drive has received international acclaim as the party which consistently hosts the finest in US and UK talent and Seoul is now widely recognized as one of the top Drum and Bass promoters and DJs on the East Coast. Expanding on the success of the Direct Drive party, Seoul formed an event production and promotion company with the same name.
